of Commerce and Dr. Ron Folman, Head of the Nanotechnology Department Ben-Gurion University who will discuss "Current Nanotech research projects at BGU and their Impact on the future"
Dr. Ron Folman was born
in Tel-Aviv in 1963 and spent his childhood growing up in Israel, England, the
U.S. and Australia. At 18 years of age, Ron enlisted in the Israel Air Force,
becoming a combat pilot while simultaneously finishing his B.Sc. through
independent study. Ron received his M.Sc. and Ph.D. in high-energy physics.
Following five years of Post-Doctoral research in Atomic Physics in Europe, Ron
decided to go "home." He chose Ben-Gurion University so that he could fulfill his lifelong committment to the development of the Negev by advancing regional scientific research. Dr. Folman has written extensively for scientific journals and taught courses in popular science. He has also devoted time to the cause of human rights, focusing on military intervention in cases of genocide through the Israeli branch of Amnesty International. His current research involves Precision Spectroscopy of cold atoms which has a variety of applications from atom clocks to magnetic sensors and quantum computing. All these applications involve the coherent manipulation of a two state quantum system. His research on atom chips enables new insight into many body phenomena including the use of the atom chips to investigate the tunneling and interference of matter-waves (ultra cold atoms).
